Have you ever noticed how effortlessly beautiful French women are? Gorgeous hair, perfect skin, beautiful figures … and the best look of all … A killer confidence. How do they achieve it?
I am dedicating this post to the women who adore the natural look of makeup, the simplistic way of life and the love for European fashion & makeup looks.
Beauty is skin deep is the french women’s top beauty secret, it starts with the healthy glowing skin. They are incredibly committed to their skincare regimen. Facials are a definite routine, as well as investing in good quality cleansers, toners and creams. A healthy diet also does wonders for skin (but they never sacrificing cheese, wine and the occasional baguette). For French women, glowing skin is the foundation of their beauty regimen. When our skin is healthy and taken care of, we’ll feel beautiful even when the makeup comes off at the end of the day. 🙂
French women take skincare seriously. It’s pretty much a non-negotiable that when you don’t wear a lot of makeup, you skin has to look fab. This explains why French women are so meticulous about their skincare regimens.
French women in general begin taking their skin-care regimen seriously from an early age. This gives them a huge upper hand when it comes to aging. They are serious about every step in their skincare routine from cleanser to serum to SPF and beyond. Instead of waiting for aging to begin and then fighting it with powerful, potentially irritating ingredients, they employ a routine that slows and softens the effects of aging long before the process can even begin.

When we have healthy, clean, glowing skin, the make up enhancements can come easily as a stop in the garden every morning to smell a fresh dewey Rose … To the women in France, one of the biggest beauty sins one can commit is that of wearing too much makeup. The too made up look is synonymous with the woman trying too hard, who is hiding from her true beauty, covering up her beautiful skin from herself and from the the world. A French woman’s relationship with her makeup is simply fresh and light. It’s not that French women don’t wear makeup… it is that they just pretend not to.

I find that inspiring and it’s almost amazing of a cultural difference! In France, we never push it. We don’t like to change ourselves. So when putting on makeup, we just want to look fresher, a bit more enhance, not to completely cover up, and that’s it. And we like to look the same when we take our makeup all off. We brush our brows, we curl our lashes, we put on a little bit of mascara, a little bit of blush, maybe a little bit of concealer … and we call it a day! 🙂
The women in France view the too made up look represents something more profound than simply one’s taste in skin care. One of the biggest style sins you can commit is that of looking “overdone. Any effort one puts into looking chic must be altogether discret. French cool is all about having a sophistication that seems as if it simply happened, as if you just had a natural blessing for being supremely stunning.

Here are some very simple steps to achieve the natural makeup look in the most simplistic way and looking like a gorgeous natural beauty.
Simplify Your Makeup.
It’s not that French women don’t wear makeup … it’s just that they pretend not to. Makeup is used to highlight one or two features, not all at once. A seductive red pout is almost always offset with a natural eye. A sweep of eye liner looks ravishing on bare skin. Achieving this kind of understated balance makes a statement that you are bien dans ta peau (comfortable in your own skin), and unafraid of owning your sensuality as a woman.
French women don’t wear a lot of foundation or base makeup. They prefer bare skin with a touch of color on the lips, mascara and blush.
I believe that wearing less makeup reflects French women’s innate confidence. For instance, there is something supremely seductive about a woman with gorgeous, bare skin and a bold lip color. It makes a statement that you are comfortable in your own skin, and yet unafraid of owning your sensuality as a woman. Less is more. There’s nothing worse than a face caked over with frosting highlights.
- Toss the foundation and replace it with a little under-eye concealer only.
- No No In the fake lashes department (unless you are attending a big important event)
- Definitely mascara, mascara, mascara!
- Blush is a must … crème blush is a bit more natural looking.
- Eyeliner OR eye shadow… rarely both!
- Make a statement with a fabulous red or pinkish nude lipstick.
- Emphasize either the eyes or the lips.
- Try a hint of bronzer for a “just returned from Saint Tropez” glow.
- Liquid eye liner is always in style … and certainly seductive.
Always protect their skin with SPF sunscreen. For glowing skin, wear tinted moisturizer and dot a nude shimmer eye shadow on the inside corners of the eyes.
Because truly, the most beautiful makeup a woman can wear is her confidence.
French women love water. They drink water all day long. In France, water is regarded like royalty, it’s a beverage, a beauty product, a skin enhancer. France is famous for its many mineral water springs and the benefits of water are often found in beauty products. French women definitely take an inside out approach with this beauty ingredient of choice. Brands like Vichy and Avène which use mineral water in their formulations, can be found in every French girl’s beauty arsenal.
Make thermal spray water your best of friends. French women swear by thermal spray water. Calcium and chlorine (which exists in tap water) to remain on your face and neck areas, which are more fragile than skin on the rest of your body. Furthermore, using thermal spray water softens your skin tissues and allows better penetration of your toners, serums and creams moisturizer. Your skin will feel less taut and dry. Reward your beautiful skin mid day by misting with a water spray, such as this one I have been using forever. Avène Thermal Spring Water ($16.50, drugstore.com).
I also have attached a simple video tutorial makeup look by Clarins demonstrating how French Girls achieve their natural makeup look. As simple as that, it is refreshing to see that we don’t have to spend hours at our makeup table just to look good. A few simple touches still does wonders. 🙂
